Educators of Dalcroze Eurythmics have a deep understanding of the essential connection between movement and music. Feldenkrais practitioners employ movement-based strategies for helping individuals enhance their self-awareness and better leverage their intentional movement to improve their quality of life and succeed in the goals they aspire to. This workshop explores how various movement-based strategies in the Feldenkrais Method® could be adapted into musical practice by Dalcroze educators and enthusiasts to help musicians further develop the skill of embodiment and refine their ability to sense and feel connections between movement and musical performance. During the workshop Jillian will draw on her knowledge of human motor control, music pedagogy, and the Feldenkrais Method to offer movement-based strategies which can be incorporated at different points in musical learning, whether it may be encountering a musical skill for the very first time, improving a skill that has already been learned, or overcoming a specific skill plateau that has persisted for some time.
Notes for participants: Please wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move around in. Participants should have access to a space where they can lie comfortably on the floor with enough space to spread out the arms to the sides and above the head. They should also have access to a chair with a firm seat for seated parts of the lesson (no cushion). It may also be helpful to have a thin cushion that can be placed between the knees or beneath the head. A folded or rolled towel should suffice for this purpose.
About the Feldenkrais Method
The Feldenkrais Method is a gentle form of sensorimotor education that uses slow movement and mindfulness to help individuals develop a refined sense of their moving selves and improve the comfort and quality of their movement. Comfort and ease are essential to the Feldenkrais Method: at no time will participants be asked to stretch or strain their bodies. Movement sequences can be adapted by the practitioner to specific needs or movement limitations. Jillian Beacon Biography
Jillian is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner TM, offering both Awareness through Movement TM classes and Functional Integration TM lessons in Ottawa, Ontario. She is an affiliated teacher/practitioner with the University of Ottawa Musicians’ Wellness Centre where she applies her knowledge of the Feldenkrais Method to help musicians learn to sense and feel themselves while playing so they may experience more freedom and comfort in movement and enhanced expression and sensitivity in their performances. She also draws on her knowledge of functional anatomy and motor learning theories to help students restructure their practice habits to learn music more efficiently while minimizing strain on their musculoskeletal system. Jillian holds a B.Mus in piano performance and composition from the University of Calgary, and both a Master’s Diploma in Piano Pedagogy Research and an M.A. in Music from the University of Ottawa. She is a Ph.D. Candidate in Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa and looks forward to completing her research project using motion capture technology to explore the impact of somatic methods on body coordination patterns of pianists. Jillian maintains an active piano studio in Ottawa, Ontario, and is currently teaching exclusively online during the pandemic.
